The acid-catalyzed reaction of glyoxylic acid, phenol, and urea gives D-p-hydroxyphenylhydantoin, which is then hydrolyzed and converted directly by chemical resolution or enzymatic conversion of camphorsulfonic acid to obtain DN-carbamyl hydroxybenzene. Therefore, D-p-hydroxyphenylglycine was finally obtained by oxidizing with nitrous acid.
